Our Story of the Bicycle
Our story begins July 1 1874 when Mr A. T. Lane imported the first High Wheel bicycle to North America from Coventry England. It was at that day he took his first ride through the streets of Montreal. The first time that high wheel bicycle had been seen in North America. It created such a sensation! Within only a few years of his inaugural ride through the streets of Montreal, A.T. Lane had become a founding member of the Montreal Bicycle Club. Cycling's popularity exploded as bicycle clubs were started all over North America. However by the 1890's the Montreal Bicycle Club was the oldest in existence. In 1881 the Montreal Bicycle Club joined with the Montreal Snow Shoe Club and the Montreal Lacrosse Club to form the Montreal Athletic Association (M.A.A.A.). The old M.A.A.A. clubhouse was located near present Westmount High School. In 1905 it moved to a new location on Peel Street. Montreal bicycle road network in 1897. |
